Seducing the Rain God has quenched the long-drawn thirst for a collection of English translation of Bishnupriya Manipuri short stories, at long last. Much water has flowed down the Barak into the Bay of Bengal via the Surma-Meghna River System since the emergence of the Bishnupriya Manipuri literature in the river valleys. Bishnupriya Manipuri is enlisted as an endangered language by the UNESCO. The collection has fourteen stories.
In ‘Lilavati’ author Smriti Kumar Sinha successfully depicts some aspects of 12th century Indian society when the writ of Astrologers ran. The story portrays an Astronomy-Astrology confrontation. Seducing the Rain God has created a niche in the readers community in Europe. Mr. Paul Khoury and Mr. Ángel Cuevas Rumín posted this image from Germany. They are close friends of the author of the book. Some of the stories, included in the collection, were penned by the author in 2008 while he was working in SAP Research Lab, Sophia Antipolis, France . Mr. Paul Khoury and Mr. Ángel Cuevas Rumín were the co-workers and first to listen the story-lines from the author’s mouth just after writing. They are happy to see the book and their smiles reflect the shared history of creation of the stories.
SCOTLAND OF THE EAST
…I counted 39 languages on the chart for the northeast. Many are struggling to survive. Two of my workshop participants from Manipur, the most easterly state bordering Burma and Bangladesh, gave me a collection of short stories originally written in Bishnupriya Manipuri, an Indo-Aryan language. Driven from their homelands by Burmese invasions and political unrest, Manipuri speakers scattered across the region, and struggled to retain their ethnic identity and language. Virtually extinct at the end of the 19th century, Manipuri has made a comeback and is now spoken by perhaps half a million people. I started reading the book as we waited in our hotel room in Shillong for the rain to stop. The title, “Seducing the Rain God,” seemed ironically appropriate. The stories appear to be simple on the surface. But, on coming close, one observes complicated structures underneath. Indeed the author delves into the fathom of the society to collect the elements of his stories and showcases in a structured way that provides these a universal aura…. If Garcia Marquez created Macondo, R.K.Narayan created Malgudi through their writings, Smriti Kumar Sinha has similarly created his own Khumolmati in this grandeur of a story. Sabi, the main protagonist of the story, comes out as one of the strongest women characters in Indian literature through her extreme sacrifices.
The translation by Ramlal Sinha is another plus point of the collection. It has an extremely simple yet absorbing style.

Few days ago, I read a book ‘Seducing the Rain God’ by Smriti Kumar Sinha. I read each and every word in the book. I find the book is not merely a book consisting of fourteen stories originally written in Bishnupriya Manipuri, it is more of a product that is embedded with many information of the community to the pan-Indian readers as well as to the home audience. So, the book appears as a big bridge connecting many small bridges.EXPANDING POSSIBILITIES

The literary map of the North Eastern part of India is basically made available to the outside world through a maximum number of inputs from writers from Assam and to some extent Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. With the passage of time, Manipur has also registered its significant presence in the literary field with a few remarkable contributions from some of its able writers and it is in this context that Smriti Kumar Sinha emerges as a major voice from this region but interestingly enough he writes in a minor language, called the Bishnupriya Manipuri language. Sinha is an eclectic intellectual who takes pleasure in switching between different interdisciplinary branches of knowledge and he has created stories that are rich in structure and texture, novel in theme and subject matter, innovative in terms of technique and expression. He has always put emphasis on quality rather than on quantity and he believes in the economy of expression regarding his style in short story. SEDUCING THE RAIN GOD: A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES FROM THE NORTH-EAST (Niyogi, Rs 395) by Smriti Kumar Sinha takes the reader into the world of Bishnupriya Manipuri literature. Enlisted by the Unesco as a vulnerable language, Bishnupriya Manipuri is struggling for survival in many pockets of the diverse, but secluded, Northeast. That might explain the mood of despondency that runs through this collection. In “Flowers Without Fragrance”, Golapsena Rajkumar, a royal scion, is failing to make both ends meet. He could have taken to tilling in order to escape from a life of penury, but his royal lineage prevents him from making that choice. In “Death of Carpenter Dhvaja”, an octogenarian carpenter has to witness the dismantling of his house, one which he had built with his “own blood and sweat”. Traditional ‘outdated’ wooden houses are being increasingly replaced by modern RCC dwellings.
The translator, Ramlal Sinha, has been able to communicate the sense of yearning and the distinct ‘cultural references’ in simple, lucid prose. However, the typographical errors do mar the experience of reading the book.

ইংরেজি অনুবাদেও টের পাওয়া যায় গল্প লেখার কতটা দক্ষ কারিগর স্মৃতিকুমার সিনহা । ছোট ছোট মানুষের ছোট ছোট দুঃখ-সুখের গল্প বলেন তিনি অসাধারণ মুন্সিয়ানায়। প্রান্তিক জীবনের কথাকার আরও প্রান্তিক ভাষায় রচনা করেছেন অসাধারণ জীবন কথা। প্রকৃতির কোল থেকে যেন উঠে এসেছে বেশ কিছু গল্প। প্রকৃতির সঙ্গে অঙ্গাঙ্গিভাবে জড়িয়ে আছে অনেক গল্পের পাত্রপাত্রীর নিত্যজীবন। যেমন Flowers without fragrance, Fish of a dead river, Seducing the Rain God । এর মধ্যে Seducing the Rain God গল্পটি Indian Literature in English Translation – এর যেকোনও সংকলনে স্থান পাওয়ার ক্ষমতা রাখে। খরার হাত থেকে মুক্তি পেতে মেঘ দেবতার আহবান নিয়ে প্রচলিত লোক বিশ্বাস ও লোকাচারের ভিত্তিতে গড়ে উঠেছে দুর্দান্ত এই গল্প।
